This painting was inspired by the ongoing discourse surrounding the state of the Philippine penal system, where the artist was born and raised before migrating to the USA. Putting together narratives from global news headlines, personal anecdotes of his nephews and nieces who frequently visit Philippine prisons as public defenders, and his friend from the Los Angeles Police Department, resulted in a striking collaboration. The piece offers a stark comparison between the dehumanizing conditions within prisons and the perception of inmates as animals.“Packed” confronts viewers with the harsh realities of incarceration, hoping to prompt reflection on societal justice and human dignity.
